'Money debited - reply YES or NO' message on WhatsApp

A WhatsApp message posing as a bank alert says money was debited and asks you to reply YES or NO. Police in Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chittoor warn it is built to panic you into responding, which opens the door to further fraud.

🚩 Red flags

  • A 'debit alert' on WhatsApp from an unknown number, not from your bank's SMS sender or app
  • Being asked to reply YES or NO to stop or confirm a transaction
  • Pressure to act at once because money 'has already gone'

"Digital arrest" calls from fake police, CBI or customs

A caller claiming to be from the police, CBI, ED, an anti-terrorism squad, TRAI or customs says your Aadhaar, phone number or a parcel in your name is linked to money laundering, drugs or a terror investigation. They move you to a video call, show fake ID cards and a fake police station backdrop, and keep you on the line - now for days or weeks - while you transfer money to a 'safe account' to avoid arrest.

🚩 Red flags

  • A police, court, 'Data Protection Department' or other agency contacting you over WhatsApp or a video call
  • Being told to stay on the call and not speak to family, a lawyer or your bank
  • The caller says your name or Aadhaar has surfaced in a terrorism, money-laundering or national-security investigation

Fake festive deals and Instagram shops that never deliver

Social-media ads and Instagram 'shops' offer festive deals too cheap to be real, take a UPI or QR payment and deliver nothing. Some then send a fake 'delivery agent' who asks for one 'refundable' fee after another to release the parcel.

🚩 Red flags

  • A big-brand deal at an unbelievable price - clothes for Rs 149, kilos of dry fruits or firecrackers for a few hundred rupees - seen in a Facebook or Instagram ad
  • An Instagram 'shop' that moves you to WhatsApp and wants an advance by QR code
  • A 'delivery agent' asking for a passcode fee, 'refundable' charge or extra payment before your parcel is handed over

Fake bank or police call: 'hand us your cash or gold'

A caller posing as your bank's fraud team or the police says your money is at risk and wants your cash or gold. They ask you to move savings to a 'safe account', or to buy gold or withdraw cash and give it to an 'officer' or courier for safekeeping.

🚩 Red flags

  • A caller says a suspect has been arrested and your details were found during the investigation
  • Your 'bank' transfers the call to the police, or the 'police' pass you to a regulator
  • You are told to buy gold or withdraw cash and hand it to someone for 'safekeeping', or to move money to another account to protect it

'Update your life certificate' call, app or video call

A 'bank' caller says your pension life certificate must be updated today, then gets you to share your screen on a WhatsApp video call. Before that they ask for your Aadhaar and card details; whatever is on your screen they see too, and your savings and fixed deposits are emptied.

🚩 Red flags

  • A call or message saying your life certificate must be updated today, or your pension will stop
  • Being asked for your Aadhaar, debit-card number or PIN over the phone 'to update' the certificate
  • Being asked to join a WhatsApp video call and share your phone screen

Call from 'LIC head office' to revive your lapsed policy

A caller from 'LIC head office' offers to revive your lapsed policy, then asks for fee after fee into bank accounts they name. The fees keep coming for months and the policy is never revived.

🚩 Red flags

  • An unexpected call from 'LIC head office' or 'the accounts department' offering to restore a lapsed or old policy
  • You are passed on to other 'officials' who handle you only by phone and WhatsApp
  • Payments go to personal bank accounts or private firms, not to LIC's own payment page or branch
