Is EchoDoc free to use?
Yes. EchoDoc runs in your browser with nothing to install. Without an account you can open 2 documents a day and read, highlight and export them. Signing in is free too: it gives unlimited documents every day and adds My Documents, where documents you save open on any device and can be sorted into folders.
Can EchoDoc read PDF and Word documents aloud?
Yes. Open a Word (.docx) or PDF file and EchoDoc reads it aloud in a natural voice, lighting up each word as it is spoken. You can start from any word or read only a selected passage.
Are my documents uploaded to a server?
No. Opening and reading a file happens in your browser, and your recent files are kept on your own device. Only if you sign in and press Save is that document stored — in your private CryoSim workspace, visible to you alone.
Which voices does it use?
The text-to-speech voices your browser and device provide. Microsoft Edge offers free natural neural voices (they need an internet connection); you can change voice, speed and pitch while a document is being read.
Can I highlight, edit and export the document?
Yes. Highlight passages in colour, edit the text in place, then export to a Word (.docx) file with the highlights kept, or to a PDF using your browser's print-to-PDF.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
A scanned, image-only PDF is displayed page by page, but it has no text layer to read aloud — EchoDoc tells you when that is the case.
