How the Income Tax Calculator works

New regime: ₹75,000 standard deduction, then slabs of ₹4 lakh each at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%, and 30% above ₹24 lakh. Taxable income up to ₹12 lakh is fully rebated under section 87A.

Old regime: ₹50,000 standard deduction and your deductions, then 0% up to ₹2.5 lakh, 5% to ₹5 lakh, 20% to ₹10 lakh and 30% above; taxable income up to ₹5 lakh is rebated.

Both add 4% health & education cess. Surcharge, marginal relief and special-rate income are not modelled — treat the result as an estimate and confirm with a tax professional or the Income Tax portal.

Worked example

Gross income ₹15 lakh, ₹1.5 lakh of Old-regime deductions:

New regime taxable₹14,25,000
New regime tax₹97,500
Old regime taxable₹13,00,000
Old regime tax₹2,10,600

On these inputs the New regime works out ₹1,13,100 lower. With different deductions the answer can flip.

Frequently asked questions

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in the New regime?

For FY 2025-26, taxable income up to ₹12 lakh (after the ₹75,000 standard deduction for salaried people) gets a full rebate under section 87A, so no tax is payable. Special-rate income such as capital gains is treated differently.

Is this tax advice?

No. It is an indicative estimate from the published slabs; your real liability depends on details the calculator does not model.
