20-20-20 rule timer
Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 m) away for 20 seconds. Press Start, leave this tab open, and carry on working — the timer chimes when it is time to look away, counts the 20 seconds for you, then starts the next 20 minutes on its own.

Wellness only — not medical care. These are general eye-comfort and relaxation exercises. They are not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and do not treat, cure, or prevent any eye disease. For any vision problem, see a qualified eye-care professional — do not delay or replace medical care. Sudden changes in vision, flashes of light, a shower of new floaters or eye pain need urgent care.
How to take a 20-second break
- When the timer chimes, look away from the screen at something about 20 feet (6 m) away — out of a window, or the far end of the room.
- Let your eyes rest on it for the full 20 seconds shown on the timer. Blink slowly a few times.
- Do not check your phone during the break — that is close-up focus again.
- The next 20 minutes start by themselves. Pause the timer when you step away from the screen.
Tip: if you have more than 20 seconds, try the two-minute palming or slow blinking exercise.
20-20-20 timer — questions
What is the 20-20-20 rule?
A simple habit for screen work: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 m) away for 20 seconds. It gives your eyes a regular pause from close-up focus.
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. Leave this tab open and carry on working — the timer follows the clock, so it stays on time in the background. A browser that is saving power may hold a background chime back by up to a minute; ticking the notification box gives you a system pop-up as well.
Where is my break count kept?
Only in this browser, on this device. There is no account and nothing is sent anywhere; the count starts again each day.
Is this medical advice?
No. It is a break reminder. For eye pain, headaches that keep coming back, or any change in your vision, see a qualified eye-care professional.
