Slow blinking — a breath-paced eye break

People tend to blink less while staring at a screen. Slow blinking is a deliberate counter to that: you pair each blink with your breath — eyes closed on the exhale, open on the inhale — for a minute or more.

It is one of the gentlest exercises in EyeFit and appears in the eyestrain, dry eye, floaters, glaucoma and keratoconus routines, for 1 to 5 minutes at a time.

Wellness only — not medical care. These are general eye-comfort and relaxation exercises. They are not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and do not treat, cure, or prevent any eye disease. For any vision problem, see a qualified eye-care professional — do not delay or replace medical care. Sudden changes in vision, flashes of light, a shower of new floaters or eye pain need urgent care.

How to do it

A slow, breath-paced blinking break for tired eyes.

  1. Begin breathing deeply and slowly.
  2. Do a few normal blinks on your first inhale.
  3. As you exhale, close your eyes lightly and let them rest.
  4. As you inhale, open your eyes.
  5. Continue: eyes open on inhale, eyes closed on exhale — slow and rhythmic.

Tip: Completely fill your lungs on each inhale. Slowly push all the air out on each exhale.
