Colour Focus — a free online Stroop test game
Colour Focus is MindFit's version of the Stroop test. A colour word appears — "Red", "Blue" — printed in a different colour of ink. Tap the colour of the ink, not the word you read.
Reading is automatic, so the word gets in the way. That slowdown is called the Stroop effect, named after the psychologist J. Ridley Stroop, who described it in 1935. Beating it takes deliberate attention.
How to play
- You have 30 seconds.
- A colour word appears in a different ink colour — the word and the ink never match.
- Tap the button for the ink colour. There are five colours: red, blue, green, yellow and purple.
- A new word appears straight after every tap, right or wrong.
How the score works
Each correct tap is +1, each wrong tap is −1 (the score never drops below 0). Your score is the total when the 30 seconds run out.
What it trains
Selective attention — ignoring the automatic answer and giving the right one quickly.
Tips to score higher
- Look at the edges of the letters or blur your eyes slightly — it is easier to see the colour and harder to read the word.
- Keep a steady pace: a wrong tap costs a point, so rushing can lower your score.
- The buttons change order every round — read the button, do not rely on its position.
