The Rating Interview

What the inspector does: He picks an AB at random. Questions are simple, practical and unforgiving: "What is your muster station?" "Show me how you don a lifejacket." "Who is the DPA?"

Every rating knows his muster station, his duty on the muster list and his lifeboat Evidence: Ask them. The muster list must be current — not last crew's names.
Every rating can don a lifejacket and an immersion suit correctly, unaided Evidence: Practise it. Under 2 minutes for the suit.
Every rating knows who the DPA is and how to contact him confidentially Evidence: DPA poster with name, photo and number where crew actually walk.

Mooring Deck & MEG4

What the inspector does: He watches the mooring team. Snap-back zones, no standing in the bight, and the Line Management Plan must be real.

Mooring lines and tails within MEG4 retirement criteria; certificates onboard Evidence: Line Management Plan with ship-specific data, not a template.
Winch brake holding capacity tested and rendered at the correct value; records signed Evidence: Brake test records.
No mixed moorings (wire and rope on the same service) Evidence: Inspect.

Enclosed Space & Permits

What the inspector does: The highest-consequence question on the ship. He will test whether the permit system is real or a rubber stamp.

Enclosed space entry permit complete, with atmosphere test results, times and signatures Evidence: Show the last permit — including the RE-TEST before re-entry.
Gas detectors calibrated and bump-tested before every use; calibration in date Evidence: Calibration log at the locker.
Rescue equipment and standby man ready at the entrance; comms tested Evidence: Show the rescue harness, tripod, BA set, and demonstrate comms.
