Navigation

26 questions in RISQ 3.2

  • Watchkeeping is judged on what the log and chart show, so fix intervals should suit the conditions and match the plan.
  • A clear handover, spoken and written, is the moment most likely to be observed or discussed during a bridge visit.
  • The bridge watch alarm should stay on whenever the ship is under way at sea, with any exception authorised and recorded.
  • Departure and arrival checklists carry weight only when every line was actually tested rather than simply ticked.

Radio and Communication

8 questions in RISQ 3.2

  • Bridge VHF use is heard rather than read, so channel choice, call procedure and plain language all count.
  • Portable radios should be charged, numbered and tested, with spare batteries ready for mooring and cargo work.
  • Survival craft two-way radios are easily forgotten between drills, yet they must work the moment they are needed.
  • Drills that depend on communication are the best evidence that internal phones, talkback and alarms really work.
